3 tips to celebrate Halloween with your dog
For us Halloween is, in fact, fun between the fear and the mystery, sometimes touching the macabre, but the confusion of the celebrations could be too much for our dogs: besides being a source of stress, potential risks can come from it.
Here you have some tips for spending the celebration accompanied by your pup.
1. THE DISGUISES
Our dog is used to seeing us with everyday clothes, sometimes in pyjamas. Presenting ourselves with makeup, horns, cloaks and blood (even if it’s fake) could destabilize her/him.
Dog’s disguises nevertheless, even though they are cute and adorable, are not appreciated by doggies. If you want to take your dog “trick or treating” with your children, make a disguise rehearsal with anticipation and avoid those which limit sight, respiration or movement.
Also remember to use a resistant leash and even the couple of “the big bad wolf and little red riding hood” is charming, do not left the child to hold the dog: if something intrigues the dog, she/he could chase it. In any case, put him/her an identification label with a telephone number around the neck.
2. THE DOORBELL
If your doorbell rings every 10 minutes, your pup can get scared by the sound and the sight of children overexcited due to candy, so you may possibly want to take her/him to their bed or to a closed room to calm her/him and avoid an escape as the door is always open.
In terms of food, the candy and chocolate are dangerous because in big quantities they can cause grave illnesses. Pay attention where you place the bowls with candies and do not their sweet eyes make you give them something to taste and give them cookies or snacks for dogs. The pumpkin could also intrigue the doggie, but as it is a raw vegetable, maybe decorated with paint, glitter or something else, it is better to maintain it at a distance and avoid tasting it.
3. CANDLES
Halloween also means decorations with candles and open flames or decorations with batteries. In the first case curiosity could get your dog burned in a more less grave manner. In the second case, however, if the batteries are ingested, this could cause asphyxia, intoxication and tissue laceration caused by the metals the batteries contain without forgetting the fright of a monster that moves suddenly.
