A little puppy as a gift?

First of all, remember that a dog is not a last minute gift: if you want to find a puppy you sometimes have to wait for mother nature and the adequate time to separate the puppy from its mother.

Here is why to buy or give a puppy for Christmas

1. Benefits:

We have already talked about why raising children and dogs together is good for but you can also have the same rules and conclusions for adults. Living with a dog makes them move more, takes anxiety and stress away and makes them more responsible.

2. Friendship:

You will never have such a special friend as a dog because to them you are perfect and they love you just the way you are, tall or short, with light or dark skin, with all your virtues and defects. A dog loves you unconditionally and it is not by chance they are called a man’s best friend because their presence will make you forget the worst day.

3. The adequate moment:

Christmas holidays is a good moment to welcome a puppy because many people can take a break from work and spend more time with the newly arrived and create a wonderful bond that will stay with us in the coming years.

Also, it is not just a factor, cold weather is the enemy to parasites (that usually appear in spring).

4. Imagine the excitement of the recipient:

Think about giving a puppy to your children or grandchildren (depending on the parents). Their astonishment, their happiness and maybe some happy tears that will confirm that it will be the best gift they can receive.

5. All their lives:

A furry friend will be with us for many years, then unfortunately, the circle of life will continue its course. But it will be during their whole life and this will create an extraordinary and special relationship with the family members.

Here is why not to get or give a puppy for Christmas:

1. Christmas fever:

The Christmas gifts frenzy makes us buy useless items that pile up during the year. A dog is a living being, it is not a whim or a trend of the moment. The dog that enters into a family will be a part of it in all aspects, therefore the decision must be well thought out.

2. The recipient:

Each family has its own balance that can be altered by the new member. The owners must do their part of taking care of and educating the new member dedicating the adequate amount of attention and time. Are you sure that everyone is up for it? Do we know the family’s habits? Have we considered the presence of other animals?

3. To impose our choice:

If you decide to give a puppy to someone even though they truly wish for it, means deciding for the others and impose your will. We’ll they like this gift? First talk about your intentions with the recipient. It will not have the surprise element but you will be sure about the conscious responsibility of the recipient.

4. The origin and fate of the puppy:

To have the breed of puppies “of the moment”, the breeders (or pretended) are willing to do whatever it takes, even bring puppies from abroad subjecting them to terrible trips or taking them away from their mother too soon. It is estimated that 30% of the puppies do not get alive to their destinations. To avoid being an accomplice, only trust able and competent people. Often, dogs abandoned in the summer are Christmas gifts, they need more attention and maybe they have destroyed something important … and the magic ends. Statistics talk about 50,000 abandoned dogs in Italy each year, potential homeless that can cause an accident, die of hunger or be abused. In our country abandonment is a crime that can be paid with up to 1 year in prison or with a fine of up to 10,000 euros.

5. The economic aspect

The economic aspect is an important factor in several ways: for the one who gives, a pure breed puppy can cost a considerable amount of money. An alternative to this is adoption through a dog pound or a shelter. Also, it is important to take into consideration the dog’s care that lives an average of 12 years, eats everyday, needs vaccinations and veterinary care, toys and kennels, etc… and maybe not everybody can include these expenses in their budgets.

Make your own pros and cons and decide if your family will add a four legged member.
