Breeds: Smooth-hair Teckel Kaninchen

Today we are talking about the smooth-hair dachshund or Toy Teckel, belonging to the Group 4 of the FCI classification: Teckel Dogs.

ORIGIN

As all the dachshund dogs, the Kaninchen has its origin in ancient times, even some studies report the presence of one of their ancestors in the Middle Kingdom of Egyptian pharaohs (2100 – 1700 bC).

This breed was used for hunting in rabbit and hare burrows (Kaninchen in German means ‘rabbit’).

The first breeding club of Dachshund dogs was founded in Germany in 1888 and it was called Deutscher Teckel Klub (DTK: German club of the Dachshund dog) and it still exists today, updated constantly by official specimens and breeders).

The smooth-hair Kaninchen dachshund is considered the starting point of all the other Dachshund type of dogs.

APPEARANCE

It is important to make a clarification: there are 3 variants of the Dachshund dog in relation to their size, that must not take the topline but the thoracic perimeter: up to 30 cm Teckel Kaninchen that we are talking about, from 30 to 35 cm miniature Teckel, up to 40 to 50 cm standard Teckel.

The size of the Dachshund cannot be predicted by looking at the parents nor during the first months of their lives, in fact, they are officially measured by experts in meeting or expositions from 15 months of age.

As they are so small with 3 kg of weight and 25-30 cm in length, the toy dogs must not strain too much, like jumping or climbing stairs.

They are elegant in their posture, always with their head held high and with an intelligent expression.

The allowed coat colors are one-colored and bicolored (tawny and yellow, black, grey, white, rust brown) and dapple.

The hair is short, dense, smooth, shinny and tight. They can also present some areas without hair.

The eyes are oval and of medium size, well-separated between them, they have an alert expression, sharp and energetic but friendly. The typical colors are dark shinny reddish brown, brown black and similar colors to the their coat.

TEMPERAMENT

They are friendly, intelligent, generous, cheerful, vivacious and incredibly stubborn by nature.

The Kaninchen Dachshund dog is a pet dog, but they still have their quarrelsome and hunting instinct towards other dogs, even big dogs.

They are very caring and dedicated to the family, but if not trained adequately, they can be aggressive towards strangers.

COST

The cost of a puppy with pedigree starts at €800.00
