Breeds: The Doberman
Today we are talking about the Doberman, belonging to Group 2 of the FCI classification: Pinscher, Schnauzer, Molossus and Swiss Mountain Dog.
ORIGIN
The name comes from their creator, German Friedrich Louis Dobermann, who created the breed in 1890.
Mr. Dobermann worked in the city of Apolda (Germany) performing various works, among them, dog hunter, tax collector, executor of judicial kidnappings, night vigilant: dangerous jobs for those times. He felt the necessity of selecting a breed that would stood up for their courage and devotion to their owner; he chose and mated particularly aggressive dogs and that is how he obtained “his breed”, a guardian dog to defend the house and go against any intruder.
The Doberman breed was officially recognized in 1898, a few years later after the death of their creator.
APPEARANCE
The Doberman is a mid-size dog, slender and robust but not too heavy, brawny and elegant. He has a proud bearing and a determined look.
Males measure 68-72 cm at the wither and weight 40-50 kg whilst females measure 63-68 cm and weight 32-35 kg.
The tail is thin and of medium longitude, curved upwards.
Ears are smooth, triangular in shape, hanging over the cheeks.
The hair is always short and shiny, black or tan with clearer shades in the legs, snout and chest. Until 1995 there were blue specimens and Isabella (a particular shade of beige) but it was discovered that the gene that gave these particular colors to the haircoat was the same one that later on provoked a type of alopecia in the dogs, scaly skin and pustules which are difficult to treat hence new births have been prohibited.
PERSONALITY
Dobermans are balanced dogs, peaceful, playful and brave. They strongly attach to their family but they are also a little rebellious and solitary that is why they need a firm education to bring out their extraordinary qualities.
A false belief is that over the years the Doberman turns crazy because their brain goes on growing while their scull remains the same creating a brain compression and consequently the craziness that would make them bite everything and everyone.
Nothing could be more wrong, but we have to say that Mr. Doberman not always made the correct mating, some specimens could be more aggressive and if they ended up with an unexperienced or wrong owner, they could become truly dangerous.
PRICE
The price of a Doberman puppy with pedigree ranges between 1.200 and 1.800 euros.
An extraordinary dog, that for years has suffered the amputation of the tail up to the second vertebrae and the trimming of the ears in a “flame” form, procedure that is now illegal in many countries around the world and is considered abuse. Since 2011, the European legislation prohibits any kind of surgery to change the appearance of an animal for aesthetic purposes and not for curative purposes.
