Breeds: The Jack Russell Terrier

Today we will talk about the Jack Russell Terrier, belonging in Group 3 of the FCI classification: Terrier, formerly used to hunt, but today it is mostly used as a pet dog.

ORIGIN

As mentioned, the selection of the Jack Russell Terrier was given precisely for hunting: at the end of the 19th century, in the county of Devon in England, reverend John Russell was looking for a little dog to carry in a horse’s bag and use them at the time that the prey, already followed by the bigger dogs and having taken refuge in a den, had to be let out. That is why it is said that the reverend made the milkman donate his little and rough dog and from that moment, John Russell (called Jack by his friends) started the selection of the breed we know today.

APPEARANCE

The Jack Russell Terrier is a little dog, longer than taller: the standard height to the crest ranges between 25 and 30 cm, while the weight is between 5 and 8 kg with a chest circumference of between 40 and 43 cm.

The haircoat changes according to the specimen and has several combinations of colors: white is the predominant with black spots and tawny brown spots. The hair is water resistant and it can be smooth or rough, in this case it is useful the intervention of a professional for the grooming. The tail also varies, but it is generally short, tall and straight when active as when resting they let loose of it.

The snout and the mouth is black, the ears are dropped forwards, small and in a V shape, the eyes are brown and vivacious. They can leave up to 16 years.

PERSONALITY

As a good hunting dog, they are very intelligent, watchful, vivacious and active. They are great companions, they always show their love even searching the participation and attention of all the family members but they would prefer the person they believe is the leader of the pack. Due to its strong temperament, it is not a breed suitable for children.

It cannot be considered a guard dog due to its size but they stay watchful and alert of strangers and intruders in the home perimeters.

They adapt to an apartment life always that there is time and adequate space to unleash his vivacity, as a matter of fact, their ideal owner is an active and sporty person. A sedentary life and incorrect food together with too many treats can make them gain weight.

Other pathologies that can affect them are the eye pathologies, patella dislocation and femoral head necrosis. Completely white individuals can be deaf but they are not allowed to breed.
